July 23 & 25, 2008—Concrete, fireplace, fans & framing

Here is a photo of the fireplace which I took Friday from the dining room. (The window shades in both rooms are down, which accounts for the darkened walls in the dining room.)

You can get a better idea of the list of the chimney from this shot. It is subtle—but definitely not even.

Here is one of the color samples for the final coat. The top part above the blue tape has the wax on it. I like it but I am a little worried that it is too close in color to the walls, but Jim likes it, so we will probably use it.

There are two other samples, but one, we don’t like at all. This one, again with wax finish on top half, is the other contender.

Jim feels that this one is too light. I think it would be great on the fireplace and the darker one would look good on the range hood, but we will probably end up using the darker one on both.

I got the pressed tin panels I had ordered for the kitchen cabinets. These came from Artisanos de Mexicano in Santa Fe, NM. They have them made in Mexico, like most of the products they sell.

The cabinet makers advised me to put them into the cupboard frames to make sure they fit. They all fit excellently and just look so fabulous with the cabinets that I was floored. You can’t see the greeny-yellow cast these cabinets have because it doesn’t really photograph well, but the tawny color of the oxidized tin works perfectly with the finish.

Here is another view of the cabinets on either side of the range hood with the tin inserts balanced inside. Once I took the photos, I took them out to be stored until Vinny and Kit, the cabinet makers, can come and install them with their backing.
